Decent Work as a Rule not the Exception

Must Read

Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions (CATUS) expects employers and the state to recognize decent work as it has been defined by the International Labour Organization (ILO) – work which will provide workers with the opportunity to earn a decent living, work in safe conditions, have the right to the freedom of association and social care and take part in the decision-making process affecting their work.
Decent work is supposed to be the rule, not the exception that is seen in a big number of cases in Serbia, said the CATUS President Zoran Mihajlović.
In the interview for the magazine „Law in business and judiciary “, he said that workers were not familiar with their own rights nor were they willing to fight for themselves when legal deficiencies were shown to them. They usually thought it was all fine as long as they had a job because it could always be worse.
„Essentially, taking their perspective, the fear that they would not be able to put food on the table always prevailed and they were left to do their job in ‘silence’ even though their job was far from being decent.
However, there were some employers who followed the rule „only a satisfied worker was a good worker, “ pointed out Mihajlović.
