On April 26, 2023 CATUS marked its grand jubilee – 120th anniversary by organizing a Solemn Academy in Belgrade MTS Hall. Besides CATUS Council members, presidents of trade union federations and councils on the territory and other representatives of trade union organizations, numerous guests from business and political sphere and trade union colleagues from abroad, Serbian PM, Ana Brnabić also took part in the event. Among the guests there were Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Nikola Selaković; Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Branko Ružić; Minister of Family Welfare and Demography Darija Kisić Tepavčević; President of Serbian Employers’Association Miloš Nenezić; President of TUC NEZAVISNOST Čedanka Andrić and Rasim Ljajić, former laureat and president of Social-Democratic Party. Foreign guests include ETUC Confederal Secretary Isabelle Schomann, representatives of Turkish trade union TOLEYIS, representatives of French trade union CFDT, Bulgarian trade union CITUB, Spanish UGT, Greek GSEE, Azerbaijan AHIK and Cypriot PEO. The Academy was also attended by numerous officials representing the ILO, AFL-CIO Solidarity Center, Friedrich Ebert Foundation and Regional Trade Union Council Solidarnost. Owen Tudor, ITUC Deputy General Secretary and Esther Lynch, ETUC General Secretary, who stressed that ETUC supported our struggle and only united we could change things, addressed the gathering through video messages. In his keynote speech, CATUS President Ljubisav Orbovic pointed out that in those difficult times of digitalisation when new methods of struggle were necessary and where traditional jobs were disappearing due to rapid technological changes, it was clear that only if we were united and refused to back down, we would be able to fight for what we truly believed in. An extremely worrying fact is that communication is done in the virtual sphere where even dismissals are delivered by electronic mail. There are many questions and ready-made answers do not exist. Trade union is requested to adjust and adopt a new mindset. The Solemn Academy was finished with a message The Past is the Guideline, the Future is the Way. CATUS is proud of its long and rich trade union history while looking ahead and making it clear it will never get tired of the struggle and workers’ voice will always be heard in a powerful and energetic way.
