Under the slogan OUR POSITION IS TO RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION, Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia marked the International Labour Day in front of the factory Yura in Leskovac.
Serbian Constitution and Labour Law were symbolically left at the factory gate for the Management of this South Korean company, which became the synonym of the violation of labour and trade union rights.
This gesture is a message for the factory management to study the highest legal act of the state where it runs its business and the Law regulating rights and obligations of employees and employers.
CATUS sent the message to Yura workers that they aren’t alone; the largest trade union confederation stands by them and it will use all legal means in a strong and organized manner to fight exploitation and discrimination.
After having gathered at the city square, more than 1,500 members from the whole of Serbia started moving towards the factory Yura, where the main manifestation took place.
CATUS President Ljubisav Orbović said Leskovac applied as the gathering spot compared to previous years when the May 1st was organized in Belgrade.
Increasing level of arrogance and irresponsible conduct of some employers towards workers and trade union representatives are the proof of savage capitalism ruling this area and have turned a Serbian worker into a slave.
“That is why we came here to say that they may not do what they like to our colleagues, perform mobbing, ban trade union association, but they need to respect the host country and its laws”, pointed out Orbović.
As he said, workers in factories in Rača and Niš also experience problems with their employers while working 12 hours a day, without any contribution.
Unfortunately, this has become a model of conduct for other employers, even in public sector there are some who try to imitate Yura.
Message was sent to all workers that wherever needed CATUS would be there to support and protect them.
