On the occasion of December 2, International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, the ILO estimated there were more than 40 million people around the world in modern slavery, including approximately 25 million people in forced labour and 15.4 in forced marriages.
Going deeper into the analysis, as it is said, it means that there are 5.4 victims of modern slavery per 1,000 people, while every fourth victim is a child.
Out of 25 million enslaved people in forced labour more than 16 million are exploited in the private sector, for instance in housework, construction or agriculture; 4,8 million people are undergoing forced sexual exploitation and four million of them are in forced labour organised by state bodies.
Women and girls are disproportionally hit by forced labour, amounting to 99% of victims in the industry of commercial sex and 58% of those engaged by force in other sectors.
